National Night Out in West Oakland (Part 2 of 2)

The Oakland Housing Authority, The John Stewart Company, Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center (ODALC) and the Craigslist Foundation held the 2010 West Oakland National Night Out (NNO) on 8th Street & Mandela in Oakland, California.

Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center (ODALC) provided the community with a Digital Photography booth with cool activities and an innovative approach for West Oakland youth to pick-up new skills.


ODALC Turns One

In one short year, Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center has made a bold first step into the technology nonprofit world. During that time, the City of Oakland has witnessed a number of new ideas and community projects from this ambitious and quickly growing source of philanthropy.


8th Street & Mandela – National Night Out (NNO) Block Party

ODALC supports NNO! National Night Out is a nationwide annual event designed to raise crime prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and unity, and foster community-police partnerships!


Art is in the Street

Art is everywhere; art is in the street; technology can help capture it. This workshop will help participants discover the artist in themselves and the hidden beauty all around us. Includes a hands-on digital photography exercise and quick introduction to Adobe Photoshop.

1) ODALC Workshop: Digital Image Capture & Digital Work Flow (June 11th, 1pm) – Photographing or scanning your original artwork is the first and most important step in accurately documenting your art – you’ll learn the process!

2) ODALC Workshop: Yelp and Your Small Business (June 25th, 1pm) – Relying on real-world examples, this workshop will examine the DOs and DON’Ts for engaging with customers online.

INSPIRE the Oakland community. Rouse young minds, uplift the city, and ensure that no one gets left behind in this time of technological and social transition. TRAIN young people and struggling small business owners to utilize the digital resources they need to compete in today’s workforce. Your gift will help fund ODALC’s digital media workshops and computer training courses. INNOVATE by engaging participants and taking a proactive role in community and economic development. ODALC opens up new channels of dialogue by inviting participants of all ages, lifestyles, and cultural backgrounds to interact with one another in a cooperative and constructive context.

Oakland Digital Arts & Literacy Center features Laila Espinoza (Oakland mixed-media artist and proud ODALC participant) originally from Juárez Chihuahua México. Espinoza tells Inspire Oakland viewers what about Oakland inspires her! Diversity, creativity, and opportunity are at the core of the mission and objective of ODALC.
